In 1740 Shumboku Ōoka edited a picture book entitled Gakō Senran (i.e., Aspects of the Hidden Skills of Painting). It included woodblock-printed copies of paintings by members of the Kanō School of artists. The eighteen pictures in volumes 1 and 3 which included flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Like all early eighteenth century Japanese picture books it was printed only in shades of gray.
